that's because nancy pelosi announced she's staying on as house democratic leader for another two years. that means hoyer, who is 73 years old and would have moved up to replace her as democratic leader, is stuck in the number two slot. again. this has been happening for years. decades, really. the pelosi/highwoyer rivalry ha been intense, unexpected turns and goes back a half century when they were interns together. the one common thread is this, no matter what happens pelosi always seems to end up on top. it really all started in 1998 when they began angling for a spot in the democratic leadership. their campaign was contingent on democrats taking back the majority, which didn't happen in '98 so the campaign was off. they picked it up in the run-up to the 2000 campaign but democrats fell short so there was never a vote. it was starting to get heat. lines were drawn. pelosi was the choice of liberals, hoyer favorite of new business democrats. in 2001 there was an opening for whip, number two spot. the campaign got ugly. vote was called, pelosi won it. a year later dick gephardt stepped

nancy pelosi is 72. in the world of politics, age is kind of a skewed concept. average age of members of the house is 56. and of senators it's 62. i mean, paul ryan is thought of as a young gun. he's 42. that's eight years shy of being a card-carrying member of the aarp. ronald reagan was 69 when he first ran for president. many worried he was too old for the job until his famous quip during a debate. >> i will not make age an issue of this campaign. i am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience. >> yes, reagan used age to his advantage. but seriously, how old is too old? remember senator strom thurman who commuted from walter reed to the capitol at the age of 100? his aides had to vote for him. of course, this argument isn't limited to the world of politics. ageism rages in the role world, too. how often have you heard those under 30 grumbling about those old guys sucking up all the jobs? so the talk back question of the day, should politicians have a mandatory retirement age? facebook.com/carolcnn. your responses later

nancy pelosi, the leader of the democrats in the house and the first woman to ever be speaker of that body, today she announced that although with every single woman member of her caucus, all 60 of them, that she would put her name in to stay the leader to have the democrats in the house. as we tried to preview on this show last night, that was not a terrific surprise to anyone. what was a surprise, though, was the answer that leader pelosi gave to nbc's luke russert when he asked today whether she and the rescue of the democratic leadership should consider stepping aside, simply to make room for younger members. the first reaction to the question was that the women standing with her on that stage started booing the question, literally. but then she went on to answer. >> some of your colleagues privately say that your decision to stay on prohibits the party from having a younger leadership and will be -- and hurts the party in the long-term. what's your response? >> next! >> leader pelosi? >> i guess -- you always ask that question, except to mitch mcconnell. >> excuse me, you, mr. ho

first of all we are very pleased about nancy pelosi remaining as leader. she's done an extraordinary job in helping to increase our numbers here on the democratic side, in raising the money that was necessary for us to strengthen our hand here in the house and so she has done such a good job that we urged her to please stay on and that experience really does count. let me just say this, there is some posturing going on and i do think that this posturing is going to perhaps come to an end at some point and that these leaders, all of our leaders know that the american people do not expect us to fall off this cliff. they expect us to come together and both sides take a little bit of a hit, do some compromising and move in the best interests of this country and i am very, very optimistic about our ability to do that no matter what is being said. >> a good compromise is where both sides leave the table not getting everything that they want so we'll see how this moves forward. congresswoman maximum even waters, thanks for your time this morning. >> you're so wel
